The Origins of Pilates


The founder of the Pilates technique was Joseph Pilates, born in 1880 in Germany. In the early 1920’s, he and his wife Clare, immigrated to America where he opened the first Pilates studio in New York. It was there that Joseph achieved the balance between the mind and the body, which is the foundation of the Pilates method.

Joseph Pilates warned of the ill effects of the fast tempo of modern living, and of the need to keep the body healthy and to develop the mind. He was concerned with the ways of combating unnatural physical fatigues caused by the use of telephones and cars and by the economic and political pressures.

He published his exercises as a remedy for the effects of what we now know as stress. He believed that by doing these exercises his clients could acquire control of the body and regain the natural rhythm and co-ordination of movement that civilized living erodes.
